Overview of South Philadelphia

If you like the sound of living in true-blue Philadelphia, you’ll want to check out South Philadelphia apartments. This part of the city isn’t flashy and fast. Instead, it’s low key and local—just how the residents like it. South Philly is a collection of mixed-income communities. Some are on the grittier side and others are cuter, but it’s all old school excellence.

Everything South of South Street and bounded by the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers is considered South Philadelphia. This part of the city began to blossom with tiny satellite townships as Center City expanded. It formally joined the city in 1854 and continued to grow with immigrants, mostly coming from Europe and the American South. To this day, South Philly remains ethnically engaged, with communities of Italian-, Irish-, African-, and Asian Americans.

South Philadelphia Lifestyle and Entertainment

One of the biggest draws in South Philly is the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. This behemoth is home to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Phillies, the 76ers, the Flyers, and other professional teams. If you’re going to a game in Philly, you’re most likely heading here. If you want a bite to eat in South Philly, Geno’s Steaks and Pat’s King of Steaks are two of the best cheesesteak joints in town. They’re just across the street from each other on 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue. Passyunk is a good place to spot coffee shops, bars, and other hip hangouts. South Street up along the border with Center City collects nightspots, restaurants, clubs, and bars. With all the active immigrant communities here, South Philly is a great place for ethnic food. Shoppers will be interested in the Columbus Commons area box stores, including an IKEA and a Best Buy. There’s also the Italian Market. If you saw the Rocky movies, you’ll recognize South Philly, which featured heavily in those films.
