The township of Upper Darby is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, roughly eight miles west of the center of Philadelphia. The town sits in Delaware County, bordering West Philadelphia, and it is considered part of the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area. In 1653, settlers from Sweden first arrived to the area where Upper Darby is today. The Swedes are known for introducing the concept of log cabins to the township, and Upper Darby is still home to The Swedish Cabin, which is believed to have been built in 1654. Upper Darby Township was officially split from Darby in August 1736 and was incorporated in 1907. Throughout the 20th century, Upper Darby saw a massive explosion in population and today is one of the most populated municipalities in Pennsylvania.
Residents enjoy being part of one of the major transportation hubs for Philadelphia and its western suburbs, due in large part to the construction of the 69th Street Terminal.
