West Chester, PA
Overview of West Chester
As with many parts of Pennsylvania, Chester County seems to have one foot firmly planted in American history as the other steps into the 21st century. And no area embodies that better than the borough of West Chester with architecture dating back to the colonial period and new innovations happening at every turn.
With its proximity to the bustling city of Philadelphia as well as the historic sites of the Brandywine Valley, people looking for West Chester apartments for rent will have plenty to do to keep themselves entertained.
Living In West Chester, PA
West Chester dates back to the original settlement of Pennsylvania by William Penn in 1682, when Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia counties were established. Originally known as Turks Head (named after a tavern of the same name), West Chester is the county seat of Chester County, so residents will regularly see local dignitaries walking down the same streets legislators used more than 200 years ago.
According to the 2010 Census, 18,461 people call West Chester home, meaning the area still has a small town appeal. Downtown West Chester apartments give residents the opportunity to take a stroll around town, visiting the locally owned shops and restaurants up and down High and Gay Streets.
West Chester Work and Study
Located in the borough's downtown area, West Chester University, with its 14,000 students, is one of 14 colleges that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The school is known locally for its elementary education program, which dates back to a time when the school was known as the West Chester State Teachers College.
The university also acts as the largest employer in the borough, with almost 3,000 people working for the school. The Chester County Hospital and the Chester County Courthouse are also large employers in the area as the borough notes that almost 22 percent of the population works in education, health and social services.
For those who enjoy shopping from the comfort of their couch, a job at QVC might be a good option. The online and TV retailer has its headquarters just outside of the downtown area and films much of its content at its Studio Park complex.
