The Belvidere School Complex is a prime example of the growing population of Belvidere, IL. Due to the overcrowding of two smaller schools on the north and south sides of town, it was decided that a new high school should be huilt. The complex was built over a span of many years to accomodate the growing population. It was comprised of three separate buildings: the 1893 Washington school annex, 1900 powerhouse, and the 1916 Belvidere High School. The complex served the students of Belvidere until 1989 when the school was closed. The building was rehabilitated for use as senior housing in 1996. The exterior of all three buildings retain their historic facades while featuring modern residential amenities. Residents enjoy comfortable and handsome furnishings of this facility as the Belivdere School Complex continues its legacy of service to the Belvidere community as well as the Pearl Place Senior Apartments. The Belvidere School Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
