A treasured architectural and cultural landmark, the historic Lahr Apartments first opened as a hotel in 1831. In 1861, it was transformed into a splendid four-story hotel. Located in downtown Lafayette, the renovation to the apartments was completed in 1998. The Lahr Apartments houses Indiana's oldest bar, the Knickerbocker, which was founded in 1835. The Lahr has hosted such famous guests as former President Ulysses S. Grant, writer Mark Twain, James Whitcomb Riley and Horace Greeley. John Purdue, the founder of Purdue University, maintained a permanent residence at Lahr. Our property features a picturesque courtyard perfect for summer entertaining. The greater Lafayette area offers cultural diversity with theatrical productions and concerts featuring the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra.
