Heritage Landing is located in the Minneapolis Warehouse District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the mid-nineteenth century, this area on the Mississippi River near St. Anthony Falls served as an early settlement site for the town of Minneapolis. By the late nineteenth century, the Heritage Landing site was the home of the Northern Pacific Railroad yard. The original site's most outstanding architectural feature was the massive, locally-quarried limestone retaining wall which enveloped the recessed railroad yard. Parts of that original wall can still be viewed within Heritage Landing.
