This five-county area is truly picturesque, with its scenic countryside, tall trees with colors that change with the seasons, and charming towns just a short commute away from New York City. That last fact gives you the key to life for many residents of Northern New Jersey—at about half the cost of housing in New York City, Northern New Jersey provides a great location to look for apartments for rent and find a new home.

In terms of the weather, Northern New Jersey is an ideal place to live if you like to experience all four seasons. Summers are warm and humid, while winters are cold and have moderate amounts of snowfall. Spring and summer are generally considered to be the best seasons, with sunny days, brisk nights and the bright colors of the trees and flowers everywhere you look. Local attractions include Liberty State Park, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.
Where the Jobs Are
Many people living in Northern New Jersey commute into New York City for work, but it's not a prerequisite. Plenty of employment is available within the state of New Jersey, and, in fact, the number of jobs available here has been on the rise in the past year or so. The most significant growth is in the leisure and hospitality sectors, professional services, business services and construction. Government is another major employer that has been adding new jobs for the area. Manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities have been on the decline in terms of job numbers; however, education, health services and retail trade are other good industries to explore for new jobs.

As a whole, New Jersey is one of the most expensive states in the nation, with an overall cost of living 32% above the national average, and housing a whopping 73% above the average. Statewide, average prices for apartment rentals are about $800. One study found that New Jersey is the most expensive place in the nation to rent two-bedroom apartments.
Neighborhoods to Explore
Northern New Jersey is made up of five counties with numerous cities both small and large in each. Hackensack, a bustling city in Bergen County, is a great place to explore apartments for rent. The city is known both for its excellent school system and energetic community activities.
Another popular city to explore is Hoboken in Hudson County. This city enjoys consistent growth, an upscale population, luxury apartments, beautiful parks and other great amenities. The main strip boasts ethnic restaurants, gift shops and a vibrant nightlife, populated by long-time residents and young professionals who like both the local scene and the easy commute into Manhattan.
Finally, if you like the idea of living in apartments in a big city, take a look at another Hudson County locale: Jersey City, the second biggest city in New Jersey. With its convenient location between Newark and Manhattan, Jersey City provides apartment rentals in a good location with a lot of choices in style and rent range.
