The capital and largest city in Utah with nearly 200,000 residents (and over one million in the metro area), Salt Lake City is the economic and political hub for the state. It's also the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, more commonly known as the Mormon Church. More than 150 years ago, Brigham Young led a small group of believers to the Great Salt Lake and famously declared, "This is the right place." Apparently, many people still feel that way: Today, Salt Lake City is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country with a multitude of apartments for rent.
Quality of Life
Salt Lake City enjoys a dry and sunny climate much of the year, with hot summers (up to 92 degrees) followed by snowy winters (down to 19 degrees). Locals enjoy a multitude of outdoor pastimes, including hiking, rafting, fishing and skiing. Downtown is truly the heart of the city, with major points of interest including the State Capitol and Temple Square, which includes important Mormon buildings like the Tabernacle (home of the Grammy-winning Mormon Tabernacle Choir).
And don't forget about the Great Salt Lake itself, the largest lake in the United States west of the Great Lakes. Evaporation has caused the salt levels to be high, with record salinity at around 20% (compared with only 3.5% in the ocean!). There are no fish in the lake so fishing is not an option for recreation, but bird watching and just enjoying the unique landscape are popular outdoor activities. Salt Lake City is also home to NBA team Utah Jazz. Looking for something more refined? Salt Lake City offers enough gourmet restaurants, upscale shopping and interesting museums to please the culture snob in you.
Where the Jobs Are
Salt Lake City has enjoyed excellent economic growth over the past several years and is widely considered a good place to run a business or find a job. Major employers include software, biomedical and high-tech companies, as well as the Mormon Church, local government, finance, education, research and tourism.
Cost of Living & Apartment Prices
Salt Lake City's overall cost of living is just 3% above the national average, making this a fairly affordable city to move to from most parts of the country. Housing.including apartment rentals in a variety of rent ranges.is among the more affordable expenses. Recent statistics measured the median price for apartment rentals to be $635, with the average cost of all apartments at $670 per month.
