Milwaukee Apartments and Homes for Rent

Rent.com's Guide to Apartments for Rent in Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee calls itself a "Genuine American City" as well as "A Great Place on a Great Lake," and it doesn't take long to understand why and appreciate the many benefits of this city. With just over half a million residents, Milwaukee offers a solid tradition of family values, diverse cultures, warm hospitality and a great number of interesting things to do.

Quality of Life
As the largest city in Wisconsin, Milwaukee has no shortage of recreational activities and culture. Local attractions include breweries (most of which offer tours), the Milwaukee Art Museum, buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Brewers pro baseball team and the Bucks pro basketball team. Every summer, Milwaukee hosts Summerfest, the world's biggest festival featuring 11 days of live music. Milwaukee's residents also appreciate the city's extensive park system, which includes Washington Park, Mitchell Park, Juneau Park and Estabrook Park. Milwaukee's weather is fairly mild, thanks to Lake Michigan's influence. Summer rarely gets warmer than the 70s, while winter does not often go much below 30 degrees.

Where the Jobs Are
The state of Wisconsin is most famous for two products: cheese and beer. The state's dairy farms are the country's foremost supply of milk, cheese and butter. In fact, they supply 40% of the nation's cheese and 20% of its butter! Wisconsin is also a leading manufacturer of machinery, paper, automobiles and furniture. Oh yes, and beer. For decades, several major brewers called Milwaukee home, but today only Miller Brewing Co. along with a multitude of small breweries remain, employing only a small percentage of the city's workforce. However, Milwaukee still produces more than 10% of the nation's malt beverages. Other major employers in Milwaukee include manufacturing, lithographic commercial printing and high-tech manufacturing, including the production of medical diagnostic instruments and robotics.

Cost of Living & Apartment Prices
Milwaukee's overall cost of living is 16% below the national average, making this a very affordable city to search for apartments and settle down. And luckily, there are plenty of apartment rentals to choose from, with the median price for apartments for rent at only $575 per month.

Neighborhoods to Explore
If you don.t like to spend a lot of time in traffic on your way to work, then this may be the city for you: Milwaukee boasts the shortest average commute time of any large city in the nation. That means you can search for apartments all over the metro area and be assured that your commute to work will be reasonable. But why commute even a few minutes if you don't have to? Start your search downtown, where there are comfortable residential neighborhoods tucked between high-rises and office buildings, and where it's not hard to find new multi-story condos and apartments for rent. Looking for luxury? Try checking out apartments along the new $12 million Riverwalk the city is developing in the heart of downtown. Besides downtown, you'll also find concentrations of apartment rentals near the city's institutions of higher learning, including Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.
