One of the original 13 colonies in the United States, South Carolina became the eighth state to enter the union in 1788. Theatre fans will appreciate the historic Town Theater and the specialty Columbia Marionette Theater, as well as the city’s ballet company, philharmonic orchestra and jazz dance troupe.

History buffs will want to visit The Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, which includes a collection of relics from South Carolina during the confederate period. The Lexington County Museum depicts everyday life in the area prior to the Civil War through guided tours of a 19th century farm.

In terms of public transportation, Columbia is served by The Comet, which provides bus services throughout South Carolina.
