Eventually residents settled on the name of Elgin in the 1960s after the Elgin Watch Company, one of the biggest employers in the area at the time. Today, Elgin is home to more than 1,300 residents, according to City-Data. With the big city of Columbia close by, many commuters and residents in Elgin enjoy the small-town atmosphere in the city, but still like having all of the perks of a larger city just minutes away.

One of the most popular attractions in the area is the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County, one of the best arts-supporting establishments in the state.
