Living in Lexington, SC

Lexington is a descendent of the township of Saxe Gotha, which was established in South Carolina in 1735. The first settlers were of German and Swiss descent, and helped the local economy with the cultivation of corn, wheat, tobacco, hemp, flax, beeswax and livestock. Many battles were fought in the area during the American Revolution, including the Battle of Tarrar Springs. Lexington County was established in 1785, and the town’s name was changed to commemorate the Massachusetts Revolutionary War battle. The town of Lexington was officially incorporated in 1861.

Today, Lexington continues to be one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. As the political center of Lexington County, the town offers many unique opportunities for people from all walks of life. Local students attend classes at universities 12 miles away in Columbia. Seventy-three percent of Lexington residents work in management, sales and office occupations with an additional 10 percent holding jobs in the service industry.

The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is also in town, and boasts thousands of species of plants and animals in a beautiful setting. The Zoo hosts events like Brew at the Zoo for beer lovers and Boo at the Zoo to celebrate Halloween.

Lexington is home to an annual Oktoberfest celebration, showcasing the finest selection of German beer, food and culture. With attractions tailored for people of all ages, Oktoberfest can be fun for the whole family. The Lexington Wine Walk also takes place annually for residents ages 21 and up, and features exhibitors, main street merchants and food and wine tastings from favorite local restaurants.
