The first European settlers arrived in South Carolina in 1680 with Captain Florentia O’Sullivan, who had been granted the land that would become Mount Pleasant. The area had deep water and an abundance of timber, which led to a lucrative shipbuilding business in town. During the Civil War, Mount Pleasant and Fort Sumter were able to withstand attacks because of the floating batteries between the city and Sullivan’s Island. The city was also home to a secret training camp for the Confederate H.L. Hunley submarine that later sunk the USS Housatonic from the Breach Inlet in 1864. After the war, the Charleston area was one of the first places where freed slaves began to build their own enterprises.
