Boeing operates a major assembly plant in North Charleston, which is one major source of jobs, while other major private employers include KapStone Paper and Packaging, manufacturer Cummins and Verizon Wireless. The U.S. Air Force is also a major economic driver and the largest local employer.

North Charleston provides a more affordable alternative to Charleston, and it’s possible to find great apartments for any living situation. Around half of North Charleston residents choose to rent.

U.S. Census Bureau data showed the median gross rent for 2011 was $787. Additional research found one bedroom apartments renting for between $480 and $1,140 per month.

The North Charleston Coliseum Complex hosts major conventions, concerts, performances and sporting events all year long, including the games of the local minor league hockey team, the South Carolina Stingrays, and travelling Broadway shows. North Charleston also has its own municipal golf course and serves as a major retail draw for visitors from all over the region, with shops that range from tiny boutiques to giant outlets.
