Cordova, TN

Overview of Cordova

Located in the heart of the western Tennessee Valley, Cordova is a quaint northwest suburb of the Greater Memphis community. With a population of more than over 44,000 people and a very low 5 percent sales tax, many Tennesseans are taking a second look at Cordova apartments for rent.

Known as a community of "friendship, fun and flowers," this city of well-kept yards and a small town sensibility has a warm, welcoming atmosphere close to the hustle and bustle of downtown Memphis.

Living in Cordova, TN

Long before Interstate 40 connected Tennessee to the rest of country, a wealthy Memphis resident named James W. Allen settled in the area in 1835.  Once a quiet fishing village that was well known to many Memphians for its fresh cut flowers, this community was originally called Allentown.

Cordova was known as a farming town until the turn of the 20th century when a popular railroad station was built, stimulating the local economy. As Shelby County began to sprawl and push its boundaries north, the town of Cordova was eventually annexed to the City of Memphis. However, the town still strives to maintain their distinct identity with the Cordova Community Center and other area events.

Cordova Work and Study

Since Cordova is primarily residential, many young adults in the community attend the University of Memphis. Specializing in communications, business and technology, this institution is home to over 22,000 students in the Memphis area. Known for excellent academic and athletic programs, this university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees in a wide variety of fields. A private institution in the area is Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, a Christian-based college that offers divinity courses to students looking to become pastors.

The local economy of Memphis is quite diverse, and many residents in Cordova commute to the inner city for the various job opportunities available. The largest employer in the area is Federal Express. However, there is continued job growth in the manufacturing, education and healthcare industries. Those driving to and from the Memphis area for work should take a look at Cordova rentals because of its close proximity to Interstate 40.

Rentals in Cordova, TN and Cost of Living

From 2000 to 2010, Cordova saw a 28 percent growth in population, and the low cost of living has a lot to do with it. Compared to the rest of the United States, residents in the area enjoy a cost of living index 5 points below the average. The range of rental in the town is from $700 to $1450 per month, making Cordova a very affordable place to raise a family.

Cordova Attractions and Special Events

One of the most visited attractions in not only Cordova but all of the metropolitan area is the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy. Completely supported by volunteers and donors, this park operates sustainably without any tax dollar funding. With 4,500 acres of lush foliage and green lines, this area is popular with cyclists and joggers.

Another popular festival in the area is Memphis in May. When the warmer weather heats up in the spring, Memphis residents from across the area join together for many popular musical acts, sunset symphony performances and a world championship barbecue cooking contest that last the entire month of May.

The Cordova Community Center's many festivals and events are also great ways to be an active member of the neighborhood. Originally built as a school in 1913, Cordova now uses the center for a variety of events including festivals, family reunions and celebrations.
