Living in Gallatin, TN
Gallatin was named after Albert Gallatin, the Secretary of Treasury to presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The first building was founded by Andrew Jackson in 1803 and the town was officially incorporated in 1815. Gallatin was the site of political contention at the beginning of the Civil War when most citizens were opposed to seceding from the Union but eventually placed their support behind the Confederacy. The city was an important location during the war because of its proximity to the railroad and Cumberland River, both crucial transportation routes for both forces.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Gallatin experienced steady growth, although the area maintained an economy largely dominated by agriculture. In 1970, industrialization led nearby Hendersonville to surpass Gallatin as the largest city in Sumner County, but Gallatin still holds the distinction as the county seat. Today, Gallatin is one of Nashville’s most thriving suburbs, as local residents work to increase local opportunities for work and study.
