One of the most up-and-coming areas of Davidson County located in the urban sprawl of East Nashville is Hermitage. Hermitage was mostly farmland until the 20th century, but was founded more than 200years ago by pioneer settler and Revolutionary War hero Colonel John Donelson. After Nashville began to take its roots in music publishing, many people began relocating to the area, including Donelson's son Andrew Jackson, who would soon after become the seventh president of the United States.

A wealthy southern gentleman, Jackson built a plantation well outside the city of Nashville in an area his father settled. This beautiful home was a gift to his beloved wife, Rachel, and they named it The Hermitage. Because of Tennessee's agrarian roots, Hermitage remained a rural outpost for farmers and agribusiness well throughout the 19th century.

It wasn't until Nashville saw a rapid shift in population growth due to the popularity of country music in the 1950s and 1960s that many families started moving east of the city toward the country roads of Hermitage and began to build suburban-type homes. Today, Hermitage is still considered part of the Nashville community but has an identity in its own right due to a rich history and rugged farming background.

Many students in the Hermitage area commute to local institutions in the metropolitan area, the closest being Belmont University, a small college that seen a lot of growth in the last several years after hosting one of the 2008 presidential debates. Popular with students looking to get their shot in the Music City, this university also offers a thriving music business program. With easy access to Interstate 40, students looking for apartments in Hermitage should have no problems getting to and from school. 

One of the biggest employers is Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, a multi-national corporation that is one of the largest auditing firms in the world. Taking up more than 18 acres of land and employing around 1,000 individuals in the area, the company continues to expand as the metropolitan area continues to exhibit growth.

The area continues to be an attractive area for local Nashvillians due to its reasonable living rates. The median rent as of 2009 was $825 per month and the average salary hovers around $57,000, more than $15,000 higher than the average Tennessean makes in a year, according to city-data.com. Since Forbes Magazine ranked the Nashville area as one of the top 3 boom towns in the country recently, the Hermitage area is showing no signs of slowing down.

The home of Andrew Jackson is the city's namesake, so it makes sense that this pastoral mansion is by far the biggest attraction in the area. However, there are several other popular places in the area for recreation, including the calm waters of nearby Old Hickory Lake in North Hermitage and Long Hunter State Park in South Hermitage, which is a popular area to boat and bike.

Another family-friendly resort in the area is Nashville Shores, a popular water park that offers everything from a wave pool, cabins for lakefront boating and even zip lining.
