Johnson City is part of the Tri-Cities of Tennessee, which includes Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol. The three cities represent a thriving economic area, and many residents commute between cities for work. The top employers in the Tri-City area are  K-V-A-T Food Stores, Eastman Chemical Co., Mountain States Health Alliance, Wellmont Health System, East Tennessee State University, Citi Commerce Solutions, Sullivan County Department of Education and Berkline.
