Overview of Memphis

Students and young professionals looking for studio apartments for rent in Memphis are likely to find that the Colonial Acres neighborhood in East Memphis offers a host of resources that perfectly suit their interests. With numerous cultural events, art festivals and opportunities for relaxation and nightlife in and around the area, the creative-minded will find it difficult to run out of things to do in Colonial Acres.

Culture and festivals

East Memphis is the hub of the city's cultural activities, and many of them happen in the Colonial Acres neighborhood. Especially in the spring and summer, the areas parks and spaces - both outdoors and indoors - come alive with highly attended festivals, celebrating various aspects of the arts and culture.

The Memphis Italian Festival, held annually in May or June, is one of the most popular of such events. For three days, Marquette Park becomes a hotspot for traditional Italian music performances and locally-made artisanal products inspired by the old world, as well as arts and crafts and an Italian cooking contest. For the athletically inclined, the festival also features popular volleyball and bocce tournaments.

For film enthusiasts, many of the venues that host events for the Memphis Indie Film Festival are located in nearby East Memphis and East Midtown.

April and May are particularly vibrant months in Memphis, and Colonial Acres residents can take advantage of the increased activity. The Africa in April Cultural Awareness Festival shines a spotlight on the history, culture and music of the African community. There's also plenty to do at venues close to the neighborhood during Memphis in May, a month-long celebration of the city's heritage and history that includes the world's largest pork-barbecuing competition. Events for the two festivals are held primarily in the nearby South Main Arts District.

Year-round cultural resources include lectures and performances at the nearby University of Memphis Park Avenue campus and shows at Theatre Memphis in the northeast corner of Colonial Acres.

Recreation at the parks

Residents who want to enjoy the outdoors also have plenty of options in the neighborhood. Pep Marquette Park and Sea Isle Parks lie within Colonial Acres' borders, offering well-kept paths for running and walking, as well as terrific scenery.

Some of Memphis' outdoor gems are also easy to access for those who live in the area. The Memphis Botanical Gardens lie just on the northwest edge of the neighborhood, and within them, a highly acclaimed Japanese garden offers beauty and peacefulness. Just to the south of the Botanical Gardens, the Dixon Gardens and Gallery combine an art space, featuring a permanent collection of Impressionist paintings, with beautiful flower beds and an arboretum.

Food and nightlife

Colonial Acres offers a range of places to eat and drink, and a quick drive or bus ride will open a wealth of additional opportunities to take advantage of all Memphis has to offer in the way of food and nightlife. The Cooper-Young district, for example, has a particularly high volume of top-quality restaurants. Many of the eateries in this area combine traditional Southern ingredients with Asian influences in a unique take on fusion cuisine.
