Overview of Memphis

If you're looking to find a cozy part of Memphis to settle into, you might want to seek out a townhouse rental in Victorian Village. A townhouse in Memphis gives you just enough space to stretch your legs, making it a great step up from an apartment. Your new place will have all the flair and character of Memphis, but living in the Victorian Village neighborhood will give it a cultured and cozy style as well. It might just be the perfect balance between Southern elegance and rhinestone glam.

Memphis' slice of history

Simply put, this downtown neighborhood is gorgeous. Composed of just a handful of streets - but with enough space to stake its claim as a neighborhood, Victorian Village is settled right near the center of downtown. It's also on the National Register of Historic Places - which is something your old neighborhood probably couldn't claim.

Victorian Village filled with grand 19th-century mansions, three or four stories tall, including the Harrison-Goyer-Lee House, the Italian-style Mallory-Neely House and the fabulous French-Victorian style Woodruff-Fontaine House. These aren't just stellar neighbors to have, several of them are also museums open to the public, so history buffs can satisfy their knowledge most days of the week. The interiors of the Mallory-Neely House and Woodruff-Fontaine House are preserved as examples of period living, with vintage art hanging on the walls and Victorian furnishings.

The National Civil Rights Museum is also nearby. The museum is one of Memphis' proudest establishments, established in 1991 near the former Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. The museum documents the most powerful and significant moments of the American civil and human rights movement and it houses both permanent and visiting exhibits. American history fans couldn't ask for - or be prouder of - a better local museum.

The museum is also home to the annual Freedom Awards, which have honored prominent people from the Dalai Lama to Bono to Bill Clinton - so keep your eyes peeled for famous philanthropists!

A lively and dynamic neighborhood

Just because your new area has Victorian flair in architecture, doesn't mean it's stuffy. On the contrary, you'll find plenty of Memphis' signature livelihood around Victorian Village. The neighborhood is known for its dining and live music. The Mollie Fontaine Lounge is a local standby that's popular with tourists and Memphis natives. Stop by for Sunday brunch and browse the adjoining beauty shop - or swing in for after-work drinks before heading home to your new Memphis townhouse rental.

For nature lovers, there are two of Memphis' finest parks just around the corner from your new townhouse for rent. Morris Park is right between Poplar and Washington Avenues - it's a great spot to walk, jog or play a pickup game of basketball. Edison Park, which runs alongside Adams Avenue, is smaller, but it's a nice spot to play ball with your dog or walk through on your way downtown.

Your new neighborhood isn't far from the University of Tennessee, so academia and fun goings-on are only a few blocks away. And just a street or two south of your new place is the Hattiloo Theatre, which has a penchant for great musicals at affordable prices.

Of course, if you're in the mood for a big show, you can find that, too. This is Memphis after all!
