Overview of Old Hickory

Conveniently located near Nashville in the heart of the Volunteer State, Old Hickory is one of Tennessee's fastest-growing communities. With the area's temperate climate, small-town atmosphere and high quality of life, Old Hickory apartments for rent are the perfect destination for Tennesseans looking to raise a family. Since the area is also bordered by the Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake, many residents also enjoy plenty of outdoor fun during Nashville's long recreation season. According to City-Data, more than half of the population here are married-couple families, and the median household income is more than $15,000 higher in Old Hickory than the rest of the state, making it a prosperous and family-friendly community.

Living in Old Hickory, TN

The areas of Old Hickory Lake rose from farmland more than 50 years ago when neighboring Nashville began to sprawl. Tennessee's senators and representatives at the time lobbied the federal government to build a dam (now called Percy Priest Dam) to create Old Hickory Lake, first authorized in 1946. It didn't take too long for many residential and commercial neighborhoods to pop up around the area due to the neighborhood's ideal lakefront location. The neighborhood was eventually named after President Andrew Jackson, whose nickname was Old Hickory. Today, the neighborhood is home to more than 25,000 residents, according to the City-Data.

Old Hickory Attractions and Special Events

Not surprisingly, the biggest attraction in the area is Old Hickory Lake. Every year residents and tourists alike flock the shores here to participate in fun activities like fishing, camping, hiking, boating and water skiing. There is also a plethora of wildlife here - making this area a popular spot for nature lovers and photographers.

And popular attraction nearby is The Hermitage, the beautiful antebellum mansion and grounds that Jackson and his family lived in for many years. This cultural gem is now a museum and collection of gardens.
