Living in Southaven, MS

Southaven is a relatively new community, built by Memphis real estate mogul Kemmons Wilson in the late 20th century. In 20 years, the city’s land area doubled as the population tripled. Southaven joins Olive Branch, Horn Lake and Hernando as prosperous Memphis suburbs that have experienced exponential growth since the year 2000. Southaven has a humid climate typical of the southern United States, providing an ideal environment to raise a family for people trying to escape the colder northern states.

Southaven is home to the massive Baptist Hospital - De Soto, which provides important medical care to people in the region. The hospital was the first high-rise building in DeSoto County, which speaks to the small town nature maintained in the area. Whether in the downtown area or sprawling neighborhoods, Southaven apartments are sure to please.

Southaven Work and Study

Southaven is home to the DeSoto campus of the University of Mississippi. Opened in 1996, the school works in close relation with local community colleges to offer students undergraduate courses in accountancy, business, criminal justice, education, health science, liberal arts, paralegal studies and social work. As a unique partner to the University of Mississippi and Northwest Mississippi Community College, UM-DeSoto offers a mix of academic and technical training for residents in Southaven. The university is joined by a number of educational opportunities located 14 miles away in Memphis.

For those seeking work, Southaven is a major retail hub. Global giant Kimberly-Clark has a distribution plant in town to help serve the needs of the regional population. Jobs here are in high demand, as Kimberly Clark was awarded the title of one of the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces. A number of auto dealers, specialty stores and big box retailers also have operations in the city. Fifty-six percent of Southaven residents work in sales, office, management and professional occupations. Transportation, warehousing and utilities thrive here and provide jobs for 14 percent of the city’s blue collar workers.
