The earliest settlers in Allen were the Caddo and Comanche Indian tribes. After settlers moved into the area, the tribes were removed and relocated to the north of the Red River. In the 1840s, European immigrants migrated to the town now known as Allen in search of free land. Along the Rowlett Creek near the railroad that still exists today, a battle ensued between the Native Americans and early settlers that was the last known conflict between the two groups in 1844.

In 1907, the Texas Traction Company purchased land on the west side of the main Houston and Texas Central Railroad to construct an Interurban line that would cut right through Allen as a stop between Denison and Dallas. The line was completed in 1908, but in 1915 a fire devastated much of the business district between the Interurban tracks and the railroad. The tracks remained open until 1948, but when it closed the population of Allen dropped and it wasn’t until the construction of U.S. Route 75 in 1960 that the town boomed once again.

Top employers in Allen include the Allen Independent School District, which provides a number of jobs in the educational sector, as well as fiber optics manufacturer Amphenol Fiber Systems International. A number of government, retail and medical employers also provide convenient employment opportunities. However, with Dallas only a few miles south of the city, many residents commute to the big city for work as well.

Apartments in Allen are often occupied by students attending one of the post secondary schools in the area. The Collin County Community College, Southern Methodist University and University of Texas are all within 10 miles of Allen. Students living in Allen also attend the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University, which are within 35 miles of the city.

As any city ranked as one of the top places to live in the country, the overall cost of living in Allen is slightly higher than the national average. According to Best Places, Allen is 7 points higher than the average, but food costs here are 3 points lower than the national average.

Other annual events include the Summer Sounds Concert Series and Market Street Allen USA Celebration.

For the adventurists, Allen has one of only a dozen wakeboarding parks in the country at Hydrous Wake Park at Allen Station. Allen is also home to The Edge at Allen Station Park, which is one of the largest extreme skate parks.

Kids will also enjoy Celebration Park, which features 104 acres of trails, courts and a playground. The entire park was completed in 2010, but the first phase was finished in 2003, just in time for the 50th anniversary of Allen’s charter.
