Living in Great Hills
The Austin suburb of Great Hills is one of those perfectly named places. Situated within striking distance of the city, rentals here nestle among waves of hills. This means you might get views of the Bull Creek Greenbelt or a bit of quiet privacy, but not a lawn suitable for croquet. Flat land here is hard to find!
The original neighborhood of Great Hills borders the Great Hills Country Club. After the original development began in the 1970s, areas were built up in sections known as the Arbor, the Reserve, and the Dominion. If you motor around the area, you'll be able to tell where the different stages of development started by the style of the homes.
Great Hills Lifestyle and Entertainment
Bull Creek Greenbelt runs along portions of the east side of Great Hills and is excellent for hiking and biking. If there's been rain, you can splash in the creek as well. The Great Hills Country Club offers social, golf, and tennis memberships.
Three outdoor malls are near Great Hills, offering stores from the upscale Tiffany & Co to the more casual TJ Maxx. The Arboretum is closest with shops and restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory. There's a Regal Cinema in the Gateway Shopping Center as well as a Whole Foods grocery. The Domain holds some of the nicer eateries in the area, including McCormick & Schmick's, the Kona Grill, and others.
Great Hills Rental Market
Great Hills rentals are mostly homes built in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. You can also find some luxury apartments and other more middle-of-the-road complexes in the area. The neighborhood isn't particularly close to any universities or to city action, so residents tend to be mostly families and empty nesters. The median rent in Great Hills is $908 a month.
Getting into the city from Great Hills isn't the easiest. Metro buses run along Route 183 and past the shopping centers. Capital Metro train stations can be found along the MoPac Expressway. Most likely, you'll want a car if you're living out this way.
