Living in North Austin
North Austin apartments and rentals have been drawing settlers for a long time-since 1854, to be exact. North Austin-also known as the North Austin Civic Association (NACA)-is the site of the Old Zimmerman Home. This early Texas farmhouse was built from rock and wood along the Shawnee Trail. It's one of the oldest buildings still standing in the Austin area. Naturally, most of the apartments in North Austin were built much more recently.
Austin annexed this neighborhood in the 1960s. Unplanned growth did away with some of North Austin's nicer leafy areas, but on the whole, it still feels residential and suburban.
North Austin Lifestyle and Entertainment
This neighborhood is stocked well with the staples and services residents require, but there's not much beyond that. You'll find some family-owned ethnic restaurants and a lot of fast food on North Lamar Boulevard. For fun, check out Pinballz Arcade with its classic pinball and arcade games. Painting With a Twist art studio here is also worth a visit. You can learn a thing or two about painting and then go home with your own work of art. The Domain shopping center is close by and has department stores and restaurants. Quail Creek Park is 16-acres of playground, ball fields, and hiking and biking trails.
North Austin Rental Market
Rents in North Austin tend to be cheaper than in other parts of the city. Part of that is due to somewhat higher levels of crime. It's a relatively dense, ethnically diverse neighborhood with a lot of rental properties on offer. Some apartments here are nicely remodeled but others could use a new coat of paint. Most buildings were built in the 1970s. The average North Austin two-bedroom rents for $813 a month.
Getting into Austin from this neighborhood can be tough when traffic backs up. Capital Metro trains stop at Kramer Station to the north and Crestview Station to the south of North Austin. This area is served reasonably well by Metro buses.
North Austin Resources
The Little Walnut Creek Public Library in North Austin is part of the Austin Public Library system. There are two United States Post Offices in North Austin, one on Research Boulevard and one on West Braker Lane. The Austin City Council has seven members, including the mayor. Councilmen and women are elected at large by city voters.
