Northwest Hills rentals sit alongside wide, shady streets in one of Austin's more family-friendly neighborhoods. An affluent area, Northwest Hills gets high marks for quiet, safety, and community. Many homes here offer residents beautiful hill country views out over the Bull Creek Greenbelt. Of more debatable benefit, however, is the area wildlife. The deer population in Northwest Hills isn't small or shy. That's a plus if you're enjoying a stroll, but less appealing if you're driving around blind curves or trying to grow a garden. This part of Austin was developed in the 1950s. David and Edward Barrow bought 2,000 acres of land at that time from Texas Crushed Stone-a company that used to operate a quarry here. Most of the houses in the area were constructed in the late 1960s or afterwards. As Austin boomed in the 1980s and on, Northwest Hills established its position as one of the more desirable suburban areas of the city.

Northwest Hills is well supplied with casual restaurants, community athletic facilities, and staples such as grocery stores. It's not so hot for nightlife, though. There are two shopping strips in the neighborhood, plus nearby malls. The popular Arboretum shopping center isn't far away either. You can find several good places to get a meal in Northwest Hills, ranging from quick eats to nicer sit-down places. The area is scattered with smaller parks.

Most of the homes in Northwest Hills were built in the 1960s and '70s. These are quiet places with good-sized yards on walkable streets. You'll also find higher density apartment complexes close to the MoPac Expressway. While college students tend to inhabit the apartments, the homes are mostly filled with families and empty nesters. The average rent in Northwest Hills comes in at around $1,000 a month.

Commuters will find only fair public transit options from Northwest Hills. There are a number of Capital Metro bus routes through the neighborhood, and the Metro Rail isn't too far off, either. If you're more energetic, Downtown is only a short bike ride away.

The Old Quarry Branch of the Austin Public Library system is in Northwest Hills. There's a United States Post Office on Far West Boulevard. The Austin City Council has seven members, including the mayor. Councilmen and women are elected at large by city voters.
