Because South Austin is just across the water from Downtown, it's very convenient for commuters. Metro buses ply major streets such as South Lamar Boulevard and South 1^st Street. You can get on the MetroRail or catch an Amtrak train from stations Downtown.

The Twin Oaks Branch of the Austin Public Library is in Bouldin Creek. There's no United States Post Office in South Austin, but you can find one on South Congress in St. Edwards. The Austin City Council has seven members, including the mayor. Councilmen and women are elected at large by city voters.
