Town Lake, Austin, TX
Living in Town Lake
Before the section of the Colorado River that divides Austin was renamed Lady Bird Lake, people knew it as Town Lake. The neighborhood on either side of the water here, in the central part of Austin, still goes by this older name.
Stretching from the MoPac Expressway in the west to just past Pleasant Valley Road in the east, Town Lake stays busy with buzz. The neighborhood oozes Austin character whether you're on the edge of Downtown or basking in Zilker Park. Walk along the water, wave hello to the statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and see how appealing an apartment here can be.
Town Lake Lifestyle and Entertainment
A long, skinny neighborhood, Town Lake runs through a ton of different areas. Mixed in there you'll find some seriously popular places to grab a meal or hoist a pint. TRIO, the Shoreline Grill, Garrido's, and Chuy's are all found in the Town Lake area. Entertainment options aren't scarce here, either. For starters, head over to the Long Center for the Performing Arts or the Palmer Events Center to see what's on stage.
If you'd rather enjoy the outdoors, Auditorium Shores and Zilker Park are just two of the many green spaces located in the Town Lake neighborhood. You can take a leisurely jog along the Lady Bird Lake Trail or watch the oarsmen pulling out from the Texas Rowing Center.
Town Lake Rental Market
Because Town Lake overlaps with bits of so many other Austin neighborhoods, it's difficult to generalize about housing here. You can find older homes, modern apartments, and pretty much everything in between. It's the same with Town Lake residents-sections are thick with students and others fill mostly with families. In terms of rental prices, you can find an apartment for as low as $700 a month or pay as much as $1,700 in Town Lake.
If you're going to be commuting regularly from Town Lake, the key question is: which side of the water do you want to be on? North of Lady Bird Lake, you'll be much closer to the Capital Metro subway and Downtown. City buses run a good number of routes though Town Lake on both sides of the lake.
Town Lake Resources
Depending on where you live in Town Lake, the Terrazas Branch of the Austin Public Library may be the closest. There's a United States Post Office up on East 6th Street. The Austin City Council has seven members, including the mayor. Councilmen and women are elected at large by city voters.
