The city of Bastrop is located in south central Texas, approximately 30 miles east of Austin. It is situated in Bastrop County and is considered part of the Austin-San Marcos metropolitan area. The area in which Bastrop is located today was initially occupied in 1804, with the establishment of a fort at the crossing of the Colorado River and Old San Antonio Road. It was originally called Puesta del Colorado. The town was officially incorporated under Texas law on December 18, 1837, and was named Bastrop by Stephen F. Austin in honor of the Baron de Bastrop.
