Overview of Baytown

The prosperous community of Baytown is located within the Houston metro area. With lots to do, multiple highways nearby, and a warm climate, it's no wonder Baytown is such a fast-growing city with a thriving business center.

There are different housing options available across the city. Baytown apartments for rent can be found for those interested in rental properties.

Living in Baytown, TX

Settlers first came to the area that is now Baytown in 1822. However, the city was not always one united community. The town of Goose Creek was designated early on in the development of the area. Years later, in the 1910s, the community of Pelly was formed. Shortly after that, East Baytown popped up nearby, but quickly changed its name to Baytown.

Oil, discovered in 1908, has become the area's major industry. Goose Creek's oil field started the first offshore drilling in Texas, and an enormous refinery was built in Baytown. Not only would the oil industry assist the country during World War II, it also helped fuel population growth, and new residents flocked to the area searching for jobs.

Residents of the three towns began a movement to combine all three communities into one after World War I. Even though Baytown originally opposed the idea, the three towns consolidated in 1947. The new Baytown was officially founded in January of 1948.

Baytown is now home to more than 73,000 residents. The large city has grown substantially since its beginnings as three separate small towns, and it embraces its past while looking forward to a bright future.

Baytown Work and Study

Baytown residents who wish to pursue a degree can attend Lee College, a local community college. Students can attend the school to obtain an associate degree, or choose to transfer credits to a four-year university. Oil continues to be a large industry in Baytown, and the primary employer in the city is Exxon Mobil. Other organizations that employ large numbers of residents are Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Bayer, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and Lee College.
