Overview of Coppell

Texas residents who work in Dallas but prefer to live in a more laid-back town may choose to call Coppell, Texas, home. Although it serves as a commuter community for nearby metropolitan areas of Dallas and Fort Worth - each less than a 40-minute drive from Coppell - the 57-year-old community offers its residents enough activities and attractions to separate itself from its more populous neighbors.

People looking for apartments for rent in Coppell will join a friendly, welcoming community of mostly families with children. Recent city data reports that the median age of Coppell residents is nearly 38, 68 percent of residents are married and more than 33 percent of residents are under the age of 18. For people looking to make lifelong family friends and bring their children to an educated community full of potential playmates, Coppell may be the perfect spot in the South.

Living in Coppell, TX

Early Texas settlers began moving to the area now known as Coppell in the early 1880s. In 1890, the community - mostly of German and French descent - near Dallas, which was founded in 1856, became known as Coppell. It is thought that the city was named after George Coppell, a New Yorker with a head for business and a stake in the booming railroad industry.

Rail life has been an important facet in Coppell's history from the late 1800s, providing transportation to and from local farms until roads and automobiles began popping up in nearby Texas cities and towns. A developed interstate system was not a part of Coppell transportation until the 1960s, reflecting the laid-back, rural atmosphere that still enriches the city today.

The community of Coppell has grown from 400 farmers in the 1930s to almost 40,000 residents in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Texans living in apartments in Coppell can continue living a rural lifestyle away from the buzz of big-city living right next door in Dallas and Fort Worth.

Coppell Work and Study

Coppell is located near multiple culturally diverse colleges and universities, including Austin College, Dallas Baptist College, Northwood University, Paul Quinn College, Southern Methodist College, Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan, University of Dallas College, North Texas, Texas-Arlington and Texas-Dallas, all of which are viable options for on-campus, commuter and continuing education students living in or near Coppell.

More than 68 percent of Coppell residents have a college degree, which may be part of the reason the Coppell unemployment level is significantly lower than that of Dallas County and the United States - 6.7 percent compared with 8.7 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively.

Being so close to multiple metropolitan areas offers a seemingly unlimited amount of employment opportunities for Coppell residents. Many locals are employed in local hospitals, school districts, and even the Container Store headquarters, located right in Coppell.

Rentals in Coppell, TX, and Cost of Living

Many residents choose to live in Coppell for its proximity to the employment centers of both Dallas or Fort Worth and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau reported that the median gross rent within the nine large-scale apartment facilities in Coppell in 2009 was $1,057, partially because home value and household income are higher in Coppell than state averages. One-bedroom apartments, on average, are mostly renting in the $549 to $1,040 range per month, though many properties offer units with multiple bedrooms for families.

Coppell Attractions and Special Events

If there's one thing Coppell residents know, it's great food, and the city has no shortage of unique restaurants and dining options. Whether locals are hungry for Texas barbecue, sushi, spicy Tex-Mex, sweet treats or delicious doughnuts, Coppell has it covered.

However, local attractions don't just include food. Nearby festivals, live concerts and easy access to the American Airlines Center, Cowboy Stadium, the Dallas Zoo, Six Flags Over Texas and the Fort Worth Stockyards give residents reason to get out of the house and enjoy the local sights and sounds. The Coppell Parks and Recreation Department also offers residents 480 acres of preserved land, bike trails, year-round swimming pools and plenty of shaded relief from the hot Texas sun.
