Living in Downtown Dallas, TX

Renting an apartment in Downtown Dallas puts you in the heart of this vibrant and dynamic Texas city. Downtown forms the hub of a Metroplex that spreads in all directions. Like many large American cities, the downtown area bustles during the day and becomes a ghost town at night. That's all changing for this Texas town. Professionals are moving back to the area to be close to jobs. They are rehabbing loft and other commercial spaces into residences. That is reflected in the population growth recorded in the 2010 census when downtown residents jumped six fold in 10 years.

Downtown Lifestyle and Entertainment

Downtown Dallas encompasses a wide area. The city center itself is considered within "The Loop" of surrounding freeways. But Downtown can include neighborhoods outside, but adjacent to "The Loop." Life in the city's core offers unique opportunities for eating, nightlife and entertainment. The Arts District, a 69-acre development constructed over 10 years, includes a high rise residential apartment buildings set to open in 2012. The district houses the city's visual and performing arts venues, such as the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the ATT & T Performing Arts Center, among others. Downtown also includes the historic West End District where its preserved buildings now host eateries, pubs and shopping.

The Downtown, Dallas, Rental Market

Apartments in the Downtown rental market offer some unique choices because of the selection of buildings with historical and architectural interest. You can expect to pay $650 to $850 for a modest-sized one-bedroom loft in a converted historical building. A larger unit in a contemporary mid-rise may rent from $715 to $1,000 a month. Or you can live in an area icon like the converted Mercantile Bank Building, now called The Merc, that features luxury apartments beginning at $1,015 a month. A limited number of condos and townhomes can be found in Downtown as well. Obviously the area is most popular with working professionals who enjoy a short walk or bus ride to the office.

Downtown Resources

Public transportation in the area is provided by Dallas Area Rapid Transit or DART. The eight-story main branch of the Dallas Public Library, the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, is conveniently located Downtown. The Post Office operates a Downtown location on N. Ervay St. Find out more about Dallas city government and council districts.
