In 1930, The Dallas Power and Light Company announced plans to build an eighteen story structure at a cost of $1.25 million. That building still stands at 1506 Commerce Street unscathed from exterior modernization of latter decades. The 18-story Dallas Power & Light (DP&L) tower was designed by the prominent firm of Lang and Witchell Architects and Structural Engineers. DP&L was designed in the Art Deco style that is also prominently seen at Fair Park. All visible exterior components of the DP&L tower at 1506 Commerce are intact. The Dallas Power & Light tower was originally considered an 18-story building with the 17th floor being equivalent in height of two levels. When built, this building was the tallest steel welded structure in the south. Today, it is still a bold presence in the less imaginative canyons of modern downtown Dallas. Its stair-stepped design was incorporated to prove its height and prominence. The designs of the windows symmetrically line the expanse of the tower and are capped with terracotta motifs. The conversion into 158 loft apartments encompasses all floors of both towers, with the exception of the first level. This level is reserved for retail tenants and the offices of the building. The top floor of each building is occupied by a total of seven penthouse lofts, all with private terraces and hot tubs. In every step back on the buildings, we have converted them into private terraces for particular lofts. What once was an open area parking lot is being developed into our multi-level parking structure dedicated to both towers. On top of the garage, we will have our roof plaza with fitness facilities, pool, hot tub and resident socializing space. In the lobby of the Continental Building (1512 Commerce), we will have a boutique lobby bar that will extend into the second level and pour life and excitement onto the roof plaza.
