Some of the earliest landowners in Lake Highlands were new freed slaves who founded the Little Egypt community after the Civil War on the corner of what is now Ferndale and Northwest Highway. Eventually the village had 200 homes, a school and a church. New home developments in the 1950s grew around Little Egypt, until 1962 when the residents voted to sell their land to developers. Today, Lake Highlands is a mix of single-family homes, apartments, condos and townhomes that are appealing to families of all ages.

Lake Highlands offers a quiet suburban lifestyle in its dozens of neighborhoods. Yet, as part of the one of the country's largest metroplexes, entertainment, shopping and dining aren't far away. The area offers plenty of neighborhood cafes, taverns and pubs for locals. Nearby NorthPark Center offers upscale shopping with more than 235 stores, restaurants and a 16-screen theater. The mall is anchored by Dillards, Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Nordtrom. There is also the historic Highland Park Village with its designer shops and Galleria Dallas with the added attraction of a skating rink.

The Lake Highlands District also includes its far share of quality outdoor spaces, including Harry S. Moss Park and White Rock Lake Recreation Area. There also is Flag Pole Hill Park, on the highest point in Dallas county.

Most schools in Lake Highlands are part of the Richardson Independent School District.
