Overview of South Dallas

It is home to Fair Park, which is the site of the Cotton Bowl football classic. The park was developed in 1936 as a venue for a world's fair to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Texas Republic. Today, the 277-acre park has museums, gardens, cultural facilities and hosts the Texas State Fair. South Dallas is also home to historic neighborhoods and an up and coming ones as the area undergoes changes.

South Dallas Lifestyle and Entertainment

South Dallas includes a variety of neighborhoods from the diverse Oak Cliff, to the up and coming arts district known as The Cedars. The area is home to many of the city's cultural and historic jewels. The entire neighborhood of Wheatley Place is designated as both a Dallas Landmark District and a National Historic District. Another historic site is Heritage Village. It is located in what was the city's first park in 1876, in The Cedars neighborhood. In 1969, preservationists used the park site to save historic North Texas buildings from destruction. Visitors today can explore what life was like for early Texas pioneers.

Fair Park offers more history, as well as many opportunities for fun. Site of the original state fair in 1886, most of its buildings date to the 1936 World's Fair. Today, the grounds are home to such attractions as the African-American Museum, the Museum of Nature and Science, the Children's Aquarium, Texas Discovery Gardens, the Museum of Automotive History and so much more. But the area has more to offer than history. Exposition Park, across from the fairgrounds, is developing in a surprising mix of bars, clubs and restaurants.
