Rent an apartment in Turtle Creek Dallas, TX, and you'll be living in a neighborhood that uniquely combines upscale urban living with oodles of green space. It is located roughly along the border between North Dallas and Uptown, the trendy and "coolest" section of Dallas. The Turtle Creek neighborhood takes its name from the small tributary of the Trinity River that runs through it. The origins of the community the name are uncertain.
One story is that the creek was named by Dallas founder James Beeman in 1842. Another story attributes the name to some survivors of a Indian scouting party that camped there in 1837. Fed by natural springs, the creek has never run dry. Notably in 1959, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Dallas Theater Center was built in woods on the creek. The space was officially preserved by the city in 1974 as a greenbelt.
Turtle Creek Lifestyle and Entertainment
Over the past decade the entire Uptown district has undergone a rebirth. This has added a wide variety of new eating, nightlife and shopping opportunities in for Turtle Creek residents. The West Village in the heart of Uptown is one such destination with cafes, lounges, trendy shopping and more. Another close-in mecca is Victory Park near the American Airlines Center which is becoming a new entertainment area. McKinney Avenue offers many boutiques and galleries for strolling and browsing.
Yet, for all the urban amenities, the city dwellers in this community actively preserve, protect and promote the greenbelt that is the Turtle Creek corridor. They value it as an asset because it contributes to not only the quality of life in the area, but to property values as well. Running nearly parallel to the creek, a few blocks away is another outdoor venue that has become very popular. The Katy Trail, built on the old right of way of the Missiouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, offers a space for joggers, walkers, bikers and skaters.
The Turtle Creek Rental Market
Apartment rentals in Turtle Creek tend to be a bit upscale. The community is a mix of old and new. Historic commercial and residential buildings from the early 20th century live comfortably with mid-century and modern construction on tree-lined boulevards. Rents are significantly higher at about $1,000 a month than the $650 average for Dallas. Yet, rents can vary widely depending on the type of building, apartment size and amenities. You can choose from typical mid-century low-rises, converted lofts, mid-rises and high-rises. Other options include condos, townhomes and single-family homes.
The area is popular with people of all ages, but particularly those in their late 20s, 30s and 40s, especially single professionals. Most people in the area have a 10- to 20-minute commute.
Turtle Creek Resources
The Turtle Creek is located on the border between North Dallas and Uptown. Turtle Creek commuters can easily access downtown freeways. DART bus routes and the Green line light rail also serve the community.
