Overview of Desoto
In 2006, DeSoto was named an All-American City by the National Civic League, a prestigious award given to only 10 cities in the country. The suburb of Dallas is a part of the Best Southwest, a region made up of DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Duncanville and Lancaster. Spanning more than 21 square miles, DeSoto is a bustling urban development with a quaint downtown area with easy access to transportation, recreation and entertainment.

Eleven years after Texas won its independence from Mexico, DeSoto became a settlement making it one of the oldest in North Texas. A year later in 1848, settler T.J. Johnson from Tennessee built a small general store at the corner of what is now called the Belt Line and Hampton roads intersection. Back then the crossroads gave wagons easy access to Dallas and the Shiloh community in Ellis County.
It wasn’t until after the World War II era that DeSoto really began to grow along with more other cities and towns in Dallas County. Since the city wasn’t able to handle all the growth by itself, and needed an adequate water distribution system. This kickstarted DeSoto to request incorporation later passed in March of 1949.

Since DeSoto is located conveniently near Dallas, the DFW International Airport and several other transportation resources, it is a hub for business opportunities. For example, the Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration is an event that rotates to four different cities in the general area. Dating back to the Civil War era when news was announced that all the slaves were free, African-Americans celebrated Juneteenth with music, barbeques, picnics and ethnic attire.
