Overview of Desoto

In 2006, DeSoto was named an All-American City by the National Civic League, a prestigious award given to only 10 cities in the country. The suburb of Dallas is a part of the Best Southwest, a region made up of DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Duncanville and Lancaster. Spanning more than 21 square miles, DeSoto is a bustling urban development with a quaint downtown area with easy access to transportation, recreation and entertainment.

DeSoto apartments for rent boast plenty of outdoor recreation for the biggest of adventure enthusiasts. The Windmill Hill Nature Preserve features slight slopes and steep hills to hike through. Hidden in the woods, the 75 acres of land was set aside by the city of DeSoto and Dallas County as public space. The hiking trail, named one of the best urban trails by the Dallas Observer in 2001, has well preserved flowers and fauna for beautiful scenery along any walk or run. Windmill Hill Nature Preserve is only one of many parks in DeSoto, a major attraction to residents of the area.

According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of DeSoto has gradually been increasing since 1990 when the population was just over 30,000. Today, more than 50,000 people reside in DeSoto.

Living in DeSoto, TX

Eleven years after Texas won its independence from Mexico, DeSoto became a settlement making it one of the oldest in North Texas. A year later in 1848, settler T.J. Johnson from Tennessee built a small general store at the corner of what is now called the Belt Line and Hampton roads intersection. Back then the crossroads gave wagons easy access to Dallas and the Shiloh community in Ellis County.

It wasn’t until after the World War II era that DeSoto really began to grow along with more other cities and towns in Dallas County. Since the city wasn’t able to handle all the growth by itself, and needed an adequate water distribution system. This kickstarted DeSoto to request incorporation later passed in March of 1949.

DeSoto Work and Study

Since DeSoto is located conveniently near Dallas, the DFW International Airport and several other transportation resources, it is a hub for business opportunities. The region is home to more than 20 Fortune 500 businesses and a very diverse economy. Many jobs in the area come from the health care system, manufacturing, education and transportation.

Apartments in DeSoto are ideal for students attending college in the city, or within the county. In the city limits, students attend classes at the ITT Technical Institute.

DeSoto Attractions and Special Events

For example, the Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration is an event that rotates to four different cities in the general area. Dating back to the Civil War era when news was announced that all the slaves were free, African-Americans celebrated Juneteenth with music, barbeques, picnics and ethnic attire. This event is an exciting opportunity for everyone in the community to celebrate diversity and freedom.
