The area was considered part of the great American Black Land Prairie that spanned from Canada to Rio Grande and from the Rockies to Mississippi. Today, only 1,000 acres of the original 20 million remain.

The Peters Colony named the town after a large mound covered with Indian paintbrush, which originally consisted of three small communities established in 1853. Flower Mound was fortunate enough to have survived the Great Depression without suffering greatly. The steady population lasted throughout the first four decades of the 20th century, allowing the region to become a substantial farming and cattle-raising community.

In 1961, town leaders prompted the incorporation of Flower Mound, and seven days later the goal was achieved. The vote was 105-1, and, soon after, the Denton County Commissioners Court approved the incorporation.

In Flower Mound, the top occupations are construction, management, finance, sales and service. The major employers in the area include Lewisville Independent School District, Stryker Communications, Best Buy Distribution and Service Center, Premier Manufacturing and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound.

University of North Texas is one of the largest universities in the state, offering 97 bachelor’s, 82 master’s and 35 doctoral degrees.

There are many events year round in Flower Mound for residents and visitors alike. Located in The Colony, Harvest Craft Bazaar is a major event that happens every October. More than 70 retail and handmade craft vendors showcase their products, which include holiday decorations, wood art, jewelry, baked goods, stained glass and more. The event is also known for its delicious barbecue.
