Overview of Grand Prairie

With its perfect location between Dallas and Fort Worth, Grand Prairie is in a great spot for commuters and those looking for a suburban lifestyle with lots of city amenities. This Texas community is full of lifelong residents who can't imagine living elsewhere, as well as newcomers seeking an authentic, friendly Texas town.

This area is loaded with mementos from the past, and those seeking Grand Prairie apartments for rent will discover that every day in the community is a cultural and historic experience.

Living in Grand Prairie, TX

Early settlers came to Texas in the 1840s, lured by the open space, land grants and chance to start a new life. Alexander McRae Dechman was one of these settlers, and he purchased the land that would eventually become Grand Prairie. Rather than choosing to farm all the land he bought, he allowed the local railroad to cut across his property, which would bring more people to the area.

More development came to the community when a trolley service began shuttling passengers from Fort Worth to Dallas, stopping in Grand Prairie. The growing town recognized the need for zoning ordinances, a water system and other community regulations, and many residents encouraged incorporation. It took several votes, but the town finally achieved incorporation in 1909. This allowed the downtown area to expand, and Grand Prairie became a thriving community.

New residents flooded Grand Prairie during World War II, when the U.S. Navy used Hensley Field as an aviation base. During these years, the town's population expanded from 1,000 residents to 15,000. It kept growing after the war, and the town raced to keep up with the exploding population.

Today, Grand Prairie is home to more than 179,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While it embraces its modern amenities and conveniences, the city has not forgotten its past, and works to ensure its history has an important place in the community.

Grand Prairie Attractions and Special Events

Baseball fans will love going to an AirHogs game with family or friends. This independent minor league team plays plenty of games every season, so there are ample opportunities to catch nine innings of action. With affordable tickets, entertainment during the game and a stadium with room for thousands of guests, there are more than enough reasons for a family to head to a ballgame on a warm night.

Residents looking to get outside and enjoy the nature Texas has to offer will find that there are many options to choose from.
