Living in the Alief, Houston TX

Rent an apartment in Alief, Houston, TX, and you will be in a diverse and bustling community of people of all ages, including many families. Early settlers first came to the area now known as Alief in the 1860s. It wasn't until 1894 that Harris County surveyors named the town Dairy, Texas. The new town's first settlers were Dr. John S. Magee and is wife, Alief Ozelda Magee. She became the town's first postmistress in 1895. The site of that post office is marked with a Texas State Historical Marker on the south side of 7th Street between F and G streets.

After the Flood of 1899 and the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 destroyed the town's crops, most families left and the area returned to prairie lands. One enterprising settler planted rice in the flooded area and was successful. He persuaded many to return. The railroad followed, and the area grew quickly. In 1917, the town was renamed Alief. Today a portion of the community is within Houston's city limits, while the rest is unincorporated and part of Harris County. Alief is closely associated with the nearby communities of Westchase and Little Saigon.

Alief Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is always plenty to do in Alief. For shopping, there's the West Oaks Mall. It features anchor stores Dillard's, Macy's, Sears and more than 90 other shops and boutiques. The Hong Kong City Mall on Bellaire Boulevard offers an alternative to the traditional mall experience. It features importers, Asian restaurants and a huge Asian-focused grocery store. Alief is home to Houston's largest Asian population, particularly Vietnamese and Vietnamese-Americans.

Many small, family-owned businesses line its commercial avenues. You have a wide range of choices for restaurants, many of them locally owned and, not surprisingly, featuring Vietnamese food.

The area also boasts both city and county parks, including Alief-Amity Park, Mike Driscoll Park and Alief Community Park.

The Alief Rental Market

Apartments in Alief are generally more affordable than in other parts of Houston. The area has traditionally been popular with families. Recently, more young professionals are moving into the area, drawn by the affordable rents. Many of Alief's rental units were built in the 1970s and 1980s. These are the least expensive rentals, but do not have as many amenities as newer buildings, which have sprung up in recent years. You can easily find one-bedroom apartments for under $500, and two-bedrooms for $600-$650. Condos, townhomes and single-family homes also are available.

Alief Resources

Alief residents in the Houston annexed portion of the community are part of Houston City Council District F. Visit Houston city government for more information. Alief schools are run by the Alief Independent School District. The Henington-Alief Regional Library serves the area.

Alief Zip Codes
