Living in Astrodome, Houston TX

Rent an apartment in the Astrodome neighborhood of Houston, TX, and you will be neighbors with Reliant Park, home of the Astrodome, from which the neighborhood draws its name. The Astrodome sports stadium was revolutionary when it was built in the mid-1960s. It was billed as the eighth wonder of the world when it opened in for its inaugural season in 1965. It was the first stadium with a roof over the playing field and air conditioning. Both baseball's Houston Astros and football's Houston Oilers played there until the late 1990s. In 2002, the new retractable-roof Reliant Stadium was built next door, and the Astrodome is unused today.

Reliant Park, named for the energy company, is a 350-acre complex with multiple venues at the edge of the Astrodome neighborhood. The complex hosts a wide array of conventions, concerts, sporting and other events during the year. One of the most famous is the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Most of this neighborhood is inside the I-610 Loop that surrounds the heart of Houston. The Astrodome neighborhood's eastern border is the South Freeway and on the west it's Kirby Drive. The northern boundary follows both Old Spanish Trail and South Main St. The southern boundary is partly along Holmes Road and the 610. The area is overlapped somewhat by the Medical District, home to the Texas Medical Center.

Astrodome Lifestyle and Entertainment

Once the new Reliant Stadium opened in 2002 and the entire complex became an event destination, the area began a rebirth. New restaurants and clubs sprang up to serve patrons attending events at one of the venues in Reliant Park. The area now offers a wide array of dining and nightlife options.

The neighborhood also overlaps with the area known as "Medical." It refers to the area surrounding Texas Medical Center, which is the largest in the world. It includes 15 hospitals, three medical schools, four nursing schools and so much more. It is a driving force in the area. It employees more than 90,000 people and has more than 160,000 daily visitors. A vast array of retail, service and restaurant businesses serve this community and the adjacent Astrodome neighborhood.

The Astrodome area is very popular with 20- and 30-something singles, young professionals and young marrieds who enjoy the close in location.

The Astrodome Rental Market

The Astrodome rental market is a mix of mid-century garden-style and low-rise apartment buildings with new mid-rise apartments and condo buildings. Some townhomes and single-family homes also are available. Monthly rents range from the highly affordable $600-$650 for a one bedroom, to more upscale units starting at about $1,000 monthly. The area is an easy commute to the medical center or downtown. Most residents have an average commute time 15 to 20 minutes. The area also is served by Houston's light rail service and bus lines.

Astrodome Resources

Residents of the Astrodome neighborhood reside in Houston City Council District B. Visit Houston city government for more information. Most children in the Astrodome neighborhood attend schools in the Aldine Independent School District, but some attend schools in the Spring Independent School District. The area is served the Aldine Branch of the Harris County Public Library.
