Living in Galleria, Houston TX

Rent an apartment in the Galleria neighborhood of Houston, TX, and you can enjoy some of the state's finest shopping. Houston is unique among most major U.S. cities in that it has more than one commercial or business district. With more than 2,000 companies in the Galleria-Uptown business district, you may be able to live and work in the same neighborhood. The area gets its name from The Galleria Houston, the largest shopping mall in Texas and the fourth largest in the country. The mall is a major attraction for tourists and dollars, attracting more than 24 million visitors annually to Uptown.

Development in the area began in the 1960s. Houston-based real estate developer Gerald D. Hines was instrumental in large scale growth in the Galleria neighborhood. In addition to the shopping mall, Hines also constructed the 900-foot Williams Tower that dominates Uptown. A 7000-watt beam atop that building is a visual highlight of this neighborhood at night. It can be seen from 40 miles away sweeping the sky.

Galleria Lifestyle and Entertainment

In general, this neighborhood is one of the hottest for dining, shopping and nightlife. More than 375 stores and restaurants, plus an ice rink, are the draws at the upscale shopping mecca, The Galleria Houston. Anchor stores at the mall include Dillard's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue. In addition to a number of unique and classy boutiques, it also boasts some of the most well known of stores, including Tiffany and Co., Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren. A new attraction in the area is Uptown Park, an outdoor, piazza-style shopping destination with more than 50 shops, cafes and taverns.

The Galleria neighborhood has its share of outdoor spaces as well. Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, at the foot of Williams Tower, is a community centerpiece. The nearly three acre park's main feature is a man-made waterfall that cascades over a 64-foot, semi-circular fountain. The grounds are dotted with 186 live oak trees.

The Galleria Rental Market

The Galleria neighborhood rental market offers a choice selection of moderate and upscale apartments, as well as converted lofts, condos and townhomes. You can find a one-bedroom apartment with a monthly rent of $650, but higher rents are more common in this community. Prices vary by the type of building and amenities. Luxury units are more common in the Galleria district, where rents for a one-bedroom can start $1,450 and easily reach $1,875 or more a month. Married couples and singles in their 30s and 40s are drawn to this area where the average commute time ranges from 15 to 30 minutes.
