Overview of Memorial, Houston

Rent an apartment in the Memorial neighborhood of Houston, TX, and you will enjoy some seriously serene home time. Although secluded from the noisy city, you don't have to give up the perks of city life. Just 18 miles west of downtown, you have easy freeway access to all the cultural and recreational diversions the city has to offer. The area also is home to Houston's Energy Corridor, the third largest employment center in the region. The corridor puts jobs within an easy commute of Memorial.

Memorial sprang to life in the late 1960's as Houston grew beyond its original boundary, the I-610 loop. The Memorial area includes the neighborhoods west of the 610 all the way to State Highway 6. It is south of the Katy (I-10) freeway, which helped open the area for development, and north of Buffalo Bayou. Memorial offers some of West Houston's best neighborhoods with beautiful places to call home on tree-lined streets. It boasts some of the state's swankiest addresses. Among these are The Villages, a group of small independent communities, like Piney Point Village, that are not part of Houston.

Memorial offers a quiet suburban lifestyle far from the hectic pace of the city. Yet, if you are looking to get your shopping on, you don't have to go far. Memorial is home to two malls. The Memorial City Mall is anchored by Dillard's, Macy's and JC Penney and features hundreds of stores as well as an NHL-sized ice skating rink! Or, there is the more intimate Town & Country Village with 75 shops and wonderful dining options, like McCormick & Schmick's. Plus you are only minutes from the famed Galleria Houston.

If you are interested in outdoor activities, Memorial features some great parks. Memorial Park is just east of the 610 Loop. Opened in 1924, it is one the largest urban parks in the U.S. The nearly 1,500 acre park is dedicated to the soldiers who served in World War I. The land had been a U.S. Army training camp during that war. The park is very popular with joggers who enjoy a 2.93 mile exercise trail. The park includes facilities for most sports. The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center sits on 155 acres within the park.
