Montrose began life as a "silk-stocking" residential area in the early 1900s and was a "streetcar suburb" for the growing city of Houston. Developer J.W. Link and his Houston Land Corporation planned the community and put in four wide boulevards. He built his own home here. Today, the Link-Lee Mansion is on the campus of the University of St. Thomas.
In the 1960s and '70s, the area developed a decidedly Bohemian flavor, similar to Greenwich Village in New York City. By the 1990s, things changed again, as a new generation discovered this pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. A period of gentrification began as people purchased and renovated many of the area's original mansions, cottages and bungalows. New construction took off with new apartment buildings and residences added to Neartown-Montrose.
Today, Neartown-Montrose retains its quirky, artsy feel, in a hip, upscale urban setting. Other communities nearby include: Southside and Upper Kirby.
Neartown-Montrose Lifestyle and Entertainment
Neartown-Montrose is a lively area with numerous cafes, restaurants and coffee shops. The area's popularity with young professionals and college students contributes to a energetic and hip nightlife.
For the shop-a-holics out there, the area is home to the historic River Oaks Shopping Center. When it was built in 1927, it was one of the first malls to recognize the importance of the family automobile. Dotted throughout the community is a variety of boutiques, vintage shops and more.
