New Chinatown, Houston, TX

Living in New Chinatown, Houston TX

Rent an apartment in the New Chinatown neighborhood of Houston, TX, and enjoy one of the largest Chinatown's in the U.S. Unlike older Chinatowns in cities like New York and San Francisco, Houston's version is car friendly. The area is called New Chinatown to distinguish it from the city's original Chinatown, which was located downtown. Redevelopment in that area in the 1990s, particularly the construction of the George R. Brown Convention Center, prompted Asian-owned businesses to look for a new location for their businesses.

Many found a new home along Bellaire Boulevard and then spread throughout an area roughly between Fondren Road and State Highway 6 on the east and west; and between Westpark Tollway and Beachnut Street on the north and south. Parts of New Chinatown run through several other neighborhoods, including Alief, Westchase and Sharpstown. Interestingly, New Chinatown has become a hotspot for many Asian and Asian-American businesses, including Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian and Thai.

New Chinatown Lifestyle and Entertainment

New Chinatown offers a slice of Asian life in the heart of Texas. The area is dotted with commercial and business plazas bustling with Asian and Asian-American businesses. A centerpiece of the district is the Hong Kong City Mall and Supermarket. It is the biggest Asian indoor mall in the southeastern U.S. It has more than two dozen restaurants and cafes, retail shops and an enormous market specializing in Asian foods. In general the neighborhood is chock full of a vast array of ethnic and fusion restaurants, import businesses and gift shops.

To learn more about the area you can take the Asian Heritage Tour held two days a week. It begins at the Chinese Community Center. You will visit the Hong Kong Mall, have a dim-sum lunch at the Ocean Palace Restaurant, a area landmark, and visit the Jade Buddha Temple. The tour ends at the community center with a tea ceremony.

The New Chinatown Rental Market

The apartment rental market in New Chinatown runs the gamut from affordable to high-end. One bedroom apartments are available for around $500 a month in garden-style and low-rise buildings. More upscale rentals start at $850. These include some newer and renovated buildings. The area also offers single family homes, townhomes and condos. New Chinatown is popular with families and professionals. Commute times vary from 15 to 30 minutes.
