South Belt was the ancient home of the Karankawa Indians, who were reported to be near 7 feet tall. Their reputation struck fear in settlers keeping them away from the area for a time. They did come eventually and began ranching and farming. One early landowner, Dickenson Putnam received a land grant of 960 acres in the area for his service in the Texas Army. The marshy land was later used for rice farming. In the early 1960s a development company started the first residential subdivision. Now commonly called South Belt-Ellington, the area of more than 3,000 acres is a modern residential community about 18 miles south of downtown Houston. It is in the Southside area of Houston and adjacent to Brook Forest - Clear Lake City.

Although people of all ages live in South Belt, this is a predominately young community of 20- to 40-somethings with children of all ages, as well as young singles.

South Belt is a family-oriented and family-friendly community. One of the reasons families are attracted to living here is the many recreation areas. There are two major county parks and several smaller, neighborhood parks as well. Nearby in Clear Lake City is the Sylvan Rodriquez Park. Opened in 2001, it has a astronomy theme, including a rocket-ship playground.

For shopping, the nearby Baybrook Mall offers dozens of retailers including Dillard's, Williams-Sonoma, Apple, Forever 21 and so many more. If you're looking for something a bit more exciting and different from the everyday, you can't miss with the annual "Wings over Houston Air Fest" air show. It is held at the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base, the home base of the Texas Air National Guard, in South Belt-Ellington.
