Renting an apartment in Uptown Houston, TX, puts you in the heart of one of the city's major business districts. The area is just over six miles west of downtown Houston. Uptown is home to more than 2,000 companies and is a business district that is comparable in size to Pittsburgh or Denver. It is closely related to and overlaps with the Galleria district. Development of Uptown didn't take off until the 1960s, and it truly boomed in the 1970s and 1980s. The landmark of the neighborhood is the Williams Tower, which at 64 stories is the fourth tallest building in Texas. Locals also call it Transco Tower after its former tenant, Transco Energy. At night, a 7,000-watt beacon lighting the sky from atop the building can seen for 40 miles. A mini-boom of construction brought mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings to Uptown in the late 1990s.
