Living in the Uptown, Houston TX

Renting an apartment in Uptown Houston, TX, puts you in the heart of one of the city's major business districts. The area is just over six miles west of downtown Houston. Uptown is home to more than 2,000 companies and is a business district that is comparable in size to Pittsburgh or Denver. It is closely related to and overlaps with the Galleria district. Other nearby neighborhoods include, Tanglewood, The Villages and Piney Point Village.

Development of Uptown didn't take off until the 1960s, and it truly boomed in the 1970s and 1980s. The landmark of the neighborhood is the Williams Tower, which at 64 stories is the fourth tallest building in Texas. Locals also call it Transco Tower after its former tenant, Transco Energy. At night, a 7,000-watt beacon lighting the sky from atop the building can seen for 40 miles. A mini-boom of construction brought mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings to Uptown in the late 1990s.

Uptown Park is another shopping and dining attraction. This outdoor mall is packed with cafes, taverns, clubs and shops, all in the style of an Italian plaza.

The Williams Waterfall is an outdoor feature of the area. This multi-story sculptural water fountain is in the park adjacent to Williams Tower. Other green spaces in Uptown include Post Oak Park, the 4.7 acre Grady Park and Hidalgo Park.
