Living in the Westchase, Houston TX
Rent an apartment in Westchase, Houston TX, and you will living in a community that has perfected the fine art of combining city excitement with suburban serenity. Most of what today is Westchase was originally given out to early settlers as land grants from the Spanish or Mexican governments. The area was sparsely populated well into the 20th century.
By the mid-1950s, oilman Bob Smith began buying land in the area along Westheimer Road, including many of the land grants. He eventually owned 11,000 acres in Harris County, including his ranch in present-day Westchase. It was after his death in 1973, that his widow, Vivian, sold 760 acres that led to the development of the community. The neighborhood grew with the construction boom of the 1980s. It is adjacent to and sometimes considered part of Alief. Other nearby neighborhoods include New Chinatown, Woodlake and Tanglewilde.
Westchase Lifestyle and Entertainment
There's always plenty to do in Westchase. The district offers a wide range of dining options, world-class shopping and great outdoor recreation spaces. The community was designated a "business management district" in 1995 by the Texas Legislature. By law, the district Board of Directors oversees planning and public safety, giving the neighborhood more control over its own community. As such, the area is "master planned," beautifully landscaped and a great place to live.
Westchase residents can choose from a variety of outdoor venues, including Westchase Park and the Tracy Gee Community Center. The newest addition is the first phase of the Westchase Hike & Bike Trail. The 12-foot wide trail runs north to south along the Harris County Flood Control District's drainage ditch and is fully lighted.
