Known as the "Livable Forest," Kingwood is a community located in northeast Houston, Texas. With a population of 65,000 according to the city's website, this thriving Texas town is best known for its heavily wooded forest away from the jostle of Houston. Despite its small town feel, Kingwood has maintained steady growth ever since Houston began its sprawl. With its naturally beautiful setting and excellent schools, it is no wonder that many Texans are giving Kingwood apartments for rent a second look.
Living in Kingwood, TX
The areas surrounding Kingswood were originally owned by the Foster Lumber Company. It wasn't until 1967 when a subsidiary of Exxon, Friendswood Development Company, and King Ranch, one of the oldest cattle and quarter horse ranches in the state, began construction on a suburb in Houston, that the city began to truly thrive.
As Houston continued to sprawl in the 1980s, more and more families made their move to Kingwood in search of jobs and attractive homes. By the 1990s, Kingwood became a town in its own right when it was annexed by Houston in 1996.
Ever since, Kingwood has remained a bustling suburb that gives many in the Houston area a chance to experience everything a big city has to offer while still enjoying the rural farming and ranching communities that made the area famous.
Kingwood Work and Study
Kingwood has experienced a stunning 88 percent increase in jobs despite a struggling economy. According to the Kingwood Chamber of Commerce, there are over 2,500 businesses who serve the Texas town, mostly due to its 23 minute drive from downtown Houston and 9 minute trip from Bush Intercontinental Airport.
One of the largest institutions of higher learning in the area is Lone Star College. Lone Star College offers two-year degrees and certifications in a variety of fields while also providing partnerships with many four-year universities. Many students also commute to Texas Southern University, one of the nation's largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A sprawling 150-acre campus, this university is known for accepting students from many different social and cultural backgrounds. If you are a student looking for rentals in Kingwood, you may want to begin your apartment search early in the summer since rentals may be hard to find in the weeks before classes resume in the fall.
Rentals in Kingwood, TX and Cost of Living
The median rent in the Kingwood area in 2009 was $1,169 per month, a very affordable price in the Houston area. Since the median household income was $107,815, there should be a wide range of rentals and apartments for renters to choose from in the Kingwood area.
Kingwood Attractions and Special Events
One of the most popular attractions in the area is Kingwood Cove Golf Club, a par 71 championship 18-hole golf course that has beautiful pine tree-lined fairways with a variety of tournaments and memberships.
If cars are more your thing, check out one the community's many auto shows. One of the most popular is the Texas Hoedown, a festival that features classic cars that pre-date 1972 featuring a swap meet, live music, roller derby and many local vendors.
Another one of the most popular community events every year is Kingwood's Mardi Gras Festival and Parade. Part of the Town Center Park Association, the festival features live jazz music, arts and crafts, and local food and beverages to Kingwood residents.
